To Limmern moated castle and Kistenpass
Tour description
The area around the historically insignificant Kistenpass at 2638 metres above sea level is now a control centre for electricity production. In the event of overproduction, cheap nuclear power is pumped up into the new Muttsee reservoir - and in the future, surplus solar power will probably also be pumped up. When there is a shortage of electricity, expensive hydroelectricity is then produced for the lowlands. This "money cow" grazes on remote alps and gorges in the wild Glarnerland.
Thanks to the cable car, which was built for the construction of the dam, the ascent is quick and easy. The hike soon follows the vegetation boundary between alpine farming and the scree slopes in the high mountains. The Muttsee lake lies in the middle of a mythical landscape that has gained in drama thanks to the artificial reservoirs. This year we spend the night in the very simple and exposed SAC hut in front of the Kistenpass.
This saves us time and allows us to make a detour to the marvellous Val Frisal on Sunday. The Kistenpass and this lonely high valley are pure nature.
An intensive, impressive hike about how we are reshaping - or preserving - the mountain world.
